About “The Cry for Mexican Independence” and Fiestas Patrias

Every year on and around September 16th, Mexicans commemorate their independence from Spain with a national holiday known as el Grito. This event marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted for more than a decade. On that fateful night in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church and called on all Mexicans to rise up against Spanish rule. His stirring speech rallied the people and helped pave the way for Mexico’s liberation.

Here in Atlanta, Plaza fiesta has hosted an annual celebration that also acknowledges the independence of other Latin American cultures that celebrate independence days around the same time. Other countries that have independence day celebrations in September include Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

While the majority of Hispanics in Atlanta, are of Mexican descent with an estimated 60% from Mexico, Plaza Fiesta has sought to honor all Latin American cultures with yearly events like “Fiestas Patrias.”

Every year the event is attended by more and more people looking to experience the diverse Latino Atlanta community. This is a community that is often marginalized and unheard, but through events like these, we are able to come together and celebrate our cultures.

So if you’re looking for a fun and festive way to celebrate Mexican independence day this year, be sure to check out Plaza Fiesta! You won’t be disappointed.

Hasta pronto! (Until next time!)”
